The man who is a pessimist before 48 knows too much; if he is an optimist after it, he knows too little.

– Mark Twain

We often hear from people who want better monitoring, just after a disaster strikes. I guess that’s just human nature. I think also we technologists are, by nature, optimistic. In order to build something new, we must believe in things that others have thought impossible.

It’s worth pondering, especially in light of all the dependencies that we rely on today, and to which we have become accustomed to just working.

Nothing in this world comes for free, and nothing lasts forever. Systems and infrastructures which are built very well, will run like appliances for years, without any intervention, but eventually even they will break down, some day, when you least expect it. You’d be better off knowing about it right away.

We at Rex Consulting are optimists too, but when we do monitoring gap analyses, it’s our job to be realistic, and we’re really good at it. So on a nice sunny day, when the weather is perfect, and the market is up, think of giving us a call and having a talk. We’d be happy to help you use your imagination and think of all the bad things that can happen, and how to monitor them, so that you don’t come in on Monday with all your clients upset that your application was down all weekend.
